With motivation and the drive to learn you’ll become a vital part of our team.

The challenge

A fast-evolving public corporation, the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) is committed to shaping the future of regulation in the UK nuclear industry. We have the critical job of making sure that every nuclear site in the country is safe and meets the highest standards. We now need a Conventional Health & Safety professional to join us as a Nuclear Associate. Join us and you’ll have the chance to learn and build a rewarding career as a Regulatory Inspector.

The role

Our Inspectors have a varied and challenging role, inspecting nuclear sites across the country. They examine nuclear installations, investigate incidents, take enforcement action where necessary and secure vital improvements. As a Nuclear Associate, you’ll gain a unique insight into Inspectors’ everyday work, as you handle administration and provide technical support.

As well as learning about the practical side of regulatory inspection, you’ll discover the importance of communication and collaboration. You’ll be in touch with official bodies and licensees, whom you’ll advise on best practice and help to comply with regulations. It’s all about bringing your expertise and knowledge of implementing conventional health and safety requirements to all kinds of situations, making key decisions and supporting interventions.

The person

With some experience of implementing conventional health and safety standards in a high hazard industry, you’ll be keen to learn and forge a long-term career. Your expertise will be based on a STEM degree and supported by strong organisation and decision-making skills. If you don’t have chartered membership of a relevant professional body (e.g. NEBOSH), we’ll support you while you achieve this.

While technical knowledge is key, communication is just as important. We’re looking for a collaborative professional who can build relationships with contacts at all levels.

The rewards

We offer competitive salaries at the ONR, with this role attracting a salary of £30,591 - £35,573. In addition, up to £8,000 relocation may be available. Furthermore, you’ll be eligible for an incredibly substantial Civil Service Pension scheme (including ill-health retirement and lump sum family benefits). Plus, you’ll receive a very generous holiday entitlement.

About us

ONR is a Public Corporation created to ensure the highest standards of safety and security across all of the UK’s licensed nuclear sites. Our inspectors are drawn from all manner of professional backgrounds including civil engineering, radiological protection, human factors, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering and nuclear physics. And together they’re involved in everything from assessing safety cases to planned inspections and advising licensees on areas that are difficult to regulate such as safety culture, leadership and vision.
