The Council’s Health and Safety Officer provides an advisory service to the organisation, fulfilling the role of the ‘competent person’ to ensure that the Council complies with all health and safety legislation. The Health and Safety Officer is responsible for liaising with Senior Management and the Health and Safety Committee with regards to all changes in health and safety legislation and considering the implications that this may pose for the Council and its activities. The Health and Safety Officer promotes health and safety good practice throughout the organisation. The Council has an established health and safety management system in place which continues to evolve and improve and is looking for the ideal candidate to progress this system.

You will have a recognised high-level health and safety qualification, membership of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) and experience of working within a similar role. Up to date knowledge of health and safety legislation, the current health and safety climate and the ability to apply health and safety in a reasonable and pragmatic fashion are essential to this role. Good organisational and record keeping skills are important as is the ability to work successfully on your own initiative as well as being part of a team.

The role involves some travel to other sites within the borough and occasionally around Kent to attend meetings.

Swale Borough Council is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and vulnerable adults and expects all employee and volunteers to share this commitment.

The Council considers that all roles should be able to communicate clearly and concisely.
