Job description

The site at Weybridge is home to the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) and the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD); it is also the administrative centre for the APHA Regional Laboratories. The Weybridge Science Facilities team, part of Defra group Property are responsible for managing the site. 

APHA is responsible for veterinary research and surveillance and is at the forefront of research into animal diseases; it is critical in protecting the UK farming and food industries from the impact of animal disease and for ensuring that outbreaks of animal disease are successfully contained. VMD are responsible for monitoring, testing, assessing, and controlling veterinary medicines and advising government ministers on policy accordingly. 

The site has a wide range of specialist and complex scientific facilities ¨C laboratories and a range of other buildings and is one of only 30 such sites across the world. The Weybridge site is the largest facility in terms of size and complexity across the Defra network and is currently going through a process of major capital investment in order to enhance its scientific capability and to upgrade its research facilities for the future. For the longer term we are developing a strategic plan which will look at site development over the next twenty to thirty years. 

The role 

The purpose of this role is to provide the Technical Biorisk Assurance Function, within Defra group Property Science Facilities (DgP SF), in-house capability in respect of Functional Safety. 

As Functional Safety Engineer, you will be required to work within the Technical Biorisk Assurance Function for the high microbiological containment facilities within DgP SF. You will also be responsible for providing functional safety support to projects and will be actively involved in the specification, design, implementation, operations and maintenance phases of the safety lifecycle. 

You will report to the Head of Technical Biorisk Assurance and will take a proactive approach to identifying the Defra Scientific Estate functional safety management requirements and developing and implementing suitable plans to meet those requirements. 

You will have access to a Functional Safety Management Consultancy support partnership which you will work closely with, to ensure that a high-quality customer service is provided to both internal and external stakeholders. Initially this will include working alongside an on-site Functional Safety Consultant who will provide support and guidance. 

You will work closely with senior and functional managers, including support services such as engineering and sub-contractors, to assess their needs and ensure the delivery of the Functional Safety Management policy and plans for DgP SF.
