BYK Additives UK is based in Widnes, Cheshire and is part of the BYK Additives & Instruments Division of Altana AG, a privately owned global leader in true speciality chemicals.
The site, which holds an Environmental Permit, has been developing, producing and distributing inorganic chemicals for over 80 years, and today manufactures under two major product groups Fulacolor / Fulcat® and Laponite®. In line with Altana’s long term goals, the business is investing significantly in R&D and asset capability to ensure the continued growth of these globally successful products.
Understanding and controlling the Environmental, Health and Safety aspects of activities is integral to all areas of the BYK business; from construction, operation and maintenance of their process plants to the end use of the products by their customers.

Within BYK Additives UK, EHS is seen as a key line manager responsibility. You will work with line management on the Widnes site to ensure that day to day operations are carried out to the appropriate EHS standards, whilst managing and continuing to develop the site’s ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 accredited management systems. You will take the lead on the site achieving further accreditations, likely ISO 50001 in the first instance.
You will influence and ‘lead from the front’, driving EHS performance forward through behavioural change and cultural development. Through a hands on and proactive approach, you will be the face of EHS to both internal and external stakeholders
The ability to review legislation and understand what it means for the site is of critical importance. You will also act as the primary contact with the Health & Safety Executive and Environment Agency for the Widnes site, as well as joining and developing existing networks such as the Chemical Industry Association to establish industry best practice. With strong links into the BYK group and Altana you will be responsible for divisional reporting and will be expected to take part in divisional EHS projects.
To be considered for the position of EHS Manager within BYK Additives UK, you must have a proven track record in a senior EHS role within a process manufacturing environment, with particular emphasis on behavioural change and cultural influence. You will ideally hold a NEBOSH Diploma (or equivalent) and CMIOSH membership, although candidates working towards this will also be considered.
