Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs
Support Defra’s scientific community.
At the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra), we protect the environment and support the UK’s rural economies. A key part of our work involves ensuring that animal diseases do not enter the food chain or damage the farming industries, so our Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) monitors these threats and ensures any outbreaks are contained. This is a rare opportunity to be part of exciting changes within the Defra Scientific Estate. We are undergoing a period of development as we extend our facilities and capabilities and we therefore need to recruit an experienced Biocontainment Engineer.
You will develop Technical Biorisk capability within Defra group Property Science Facilities and support projects, being actively involved in the specification, design, implementation, qualification, operations and maintenance phases of high containment engineering facilities. You will identify Biorisk management requirements and develop and implement plans to meet those requirements. Working closely with senior managers and support services, you will also have access initially to an on-site Biocontainment Engineering consultant who will provide guidance. You’ll also work with a variety of committees to contribute towards the development of Biorisk policies and objectives.
It’s our goal to support the personal wellbeing of everyone in Defra. Our benefits include generous annual leave, a contributory pension, staff bonuses and recognition, salary sacrifice benefit options and an employee discount scheme. We also offer flexible working.
